Rocketry Presentation & Demonstration

Avalon Park:  Come and hear Aerospace Education discuss the exciting world of space rockets, using real scale models.  The presentation will cover topics such as rocket parts and their purpose, how to prepare rockets for flight, how the ignition system works, how to determine a rocket’s altitude, and more!  After the presentation, you are invited to watch a live launch demonstration.

Waka Rocket!

Avalon Park:  In the past, Māori used waka (canoes) just as we use cars today and New Zealand’s waterways were like roads.  Come and join Te Rōpu Āwhina of Victoria University and Hutt City Libraries to use waka rockets to test Newton's third law - for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Avalon Park:  Calling all future engineers!  Learn all about the science and mathematics of rocketry by building a real flying model of a working rocket. Insert a small (but powerful!)  solid-fuel model rocket motor into your rocket vehicle, start your countdown, ignite the engine electrically, and watch your rocket soar into the air to be recovered via parachute! Your journey as a junior rocket scientist starts here!

This year’s problem statement focuses on finding better ways to navigate Antarctica as an analog to space missions in the future.

War Memorial Library, 2 Queens Drive, Lower Hutt: Dr Lucy Stewart on New Zealand’s Extremophiles: Looking For Life In All The Wrong Places - Forget birds and lizards: in our hot springs, oceans, and mountains, New Zealand has extremophiles, microorganisms that grow where it’s too hot, cold, salty, or acid for most living things. Many could potentially be the source of new biotechnological discoveries. Dr Lucy Stewart is a postdoctoral researcher at GNS Science specialising in the study of deep-sea extremophiles.
